Lift Smart, Stay Strong: Back Safety on the Jobsite

In construction, few injuries are as common or as preventable as back injuries. Whether it’s moving materials, carrying tools, or loading equipment, every lift matters. Here are a few ways to lift smarter, reduce strain, and maintain a healthy back for the long haul.

1. Think Before You Lift

Before you grab that box, tool, or bundle of materials, take a second to plan your lift. A few extra seconds of planning can prevent months of recovery time.

  • Check the weight — if it looks too heavy or awkward, get help.
  • Clear your path of obstacles.
  • Know where you’re setting the load down before you pick it up.

2. Use Your Legs, Not Your Back

It’s one of the oldest safety reminders in the book for a reason. It works. Your legs are built for power. Your back isn’t. Let the right muscles do the work.

  • Keep your feet shoulder-width apart for stability.
  • Bend at your knees, not your waist.
  • Keep your back straight, chest up, and core tight.

3. Keep It Close

Hold the load close to your body, at about waist height, and avoid twisting while lifting or carrying. If you need to turn, move your feet, not your spine. Keeping the weight centered reduces stress and helps maintain your balance.

4. Use the Right Tools

Mechanical lifts, dollies, forklifts, and hoists are designed to keep job sites safe and efficient. If your crew needs more lifting equipment or training, talk to your supervisor or TBG safety coordinator. The safest teams are the ones that speak up before something goes wrong.

5. Know When to Team Lift

Team lifting doesn’t just make the job easier — it makes it safer. Coordinate your movements, communicate clearly, and lift together. Two people lifting smart will always outperform one person lifting incorrectly.

Protecting Your Future Starts Now

Back injuries are one of the leading causes of lost time in construction, but they don’t have to be. A few smart habits on the job today can save years of pain tomorrow.

TBG is committed to helping Minnesota’s construction professionals build safely, work confidently, and go home strong. Because safety isn’t just part of the job — it’s part of who we are.

NurseCare Hotline

We know that workplace injuries don’t follow a schedule. That’s why we offer the TBG NurseCare Hotline, which provides 24/7 access to professional medical advice and reporting—at no cost to our Members.

When an injury occurs, the NurseCare Hotline quickly assesses the situation and ensures workers receive the right level of care. This service helps improve recovery outcomes, reduce claims costs and keep workers safe.

Always Call 911 First for Any Life-Threatening Situation

While the NurseCare Hotline is staffed with medical professionals, they can’t save your life over the phone. Call 911 if symptoms include:

  • Choking
  • Severe bleeding
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Seizure or convulsions
  • Off balance or unable to walk
  • Unconsciousness or disorientation
  • Hot, dry skin
  • Profuse sweating
  • Severe abdominal pain
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Any other medical condition you feel is an emergency

If 911 is called, the employee or supervisor can call the NurseCare Hotline after the incident to report the injury.

How it Works

1) WHEN INJURED: Contact your on-site supervisor and call the NurseCare Hotline together.

  • If your supervisor is unavailable, contact the NurseCare Hotline on your own.
  • The call should be made as soon as possible.

2) ASSESSMENT: Following specially designed question-and-answer protocols, the nurse will determine the seriousness and nature of your injury and the best way to address it.

3) TREATMENT: If you can safely return to work, the nurse will provide first aid (self-care) instructions, and if your supervisor is available, you should explain it to them.

4) OFF-SITE TREATMENT: If the nurse feels further evaluation or treatment is needed, they will refer you to a medical facility near you. They may also provide self-care instructions until you see a doctor. These will also be explained to your supervisor if available.

5) FOLLOW-UP: Keep the NurseCare Hotline number handy in case your symptoms change or worsen. Please feel free to call back with any questions, changes in conditions or concerns.
